Why Outreach?
Outreach is the foundation of our program. Our goal is not only to build robots but to build our community through the power of STEM education. We want our community to recognize what robotics is all about while giving them accessibility to the resources we already have.
Hagerty Robotics Junior Program
|
Every Friday and Tuesday evening, members host meetings for the Hagerty Robotics Junior Program located at Hagerty High School. Consisting of 40 students of seven total teams from Pre-K to Middle School, these children participate in STEM activities and LEGO Robotics for their robot season from Fall through Spring. They work on building LEGO contraptions, robots, and builds while exploring the real-world challenges of this season's theme. 2021-22 season tackled transportation and how things move from place to place. They learn about transportation techniques and the engineers in the community that make it all happen.
Over the year, they enter competitions in hopes to win against other participating teams by scoring points with their robot creations and present at expos like the Otronicon event at the Orlando Science Center to share what they've built and learned throughout the season! Our Hagerty Robotics Junior Program is essential to Hagerty Robotic's member sustainability. By mentoring teams at a young age, it not only sparks the imagination and passion for STEM in our community, but introduces new members into our program |
Hagerty Summer Camps and Recruitment Camps
During the month of July, the Hagerty Robotics members host Summer camps for children from grades K-8. This introduces our mentees into a world of STEM and provides them the opportunity to learn new skills while overcoming real world challenges in a one-week period.
For new aspiring high schoolers, we provide a one-week recruitment camp to introduce robotics concepts, understanding of programming, learning CAD, building robots, and using hardware tools. The camp gives students an intensive yet in depth idea of what we do throughout our robotics season. It is a great preparation for what new members will expect from our participating in a robotics team while sharing STEM with our community. |

January 25th - Mayor Visit
As a team, we value getting members of our community involved and keeping them updated! We recently invited the mayor of Oviedo, Megan Sladek, to our build space to share our love of STEM and FIRST with her. It was truly a wonderful experience to get involved with our local leadership and inform Mayor Sladek of our accomplishments, goals, and values as we continue to establish the importance of STEM in the Oviedo community. |
January 29th - Hagerty Robotics Junior Competition
FIRST Lego League Challenge Qualifiers Our three Challenge FIRST Lego League teams, competed at a local competition. Our members have worked long and hard this year to mentor our students to teach STEM and robotics on a multitude of levels to our wonderful mentees. Here, our FLL students were able to display their creations, show what they learned throughout the season, and have fun competing against other robotics teams in the area. |

February 7th - Cub Scout Robot Demo
We connected with a local Cub Scout troop to introduce them to FIRST Robotics and STEM. We showed how our robot worked and answered any questions they had. We shared fun STEM activities such as spaghetti tower challenges, popsicle stick catapults, and paper airplanes. |

February 19th - Otronicon
At Otronicon, volunteers from all FLL levels that we mentor had exhibits and spread their knowledge of FIRST to the convention-goers that walked by. We assisted them in setting up their boards and gave them some advice on talking to people about all the hard work that they’ve done. The kids did a great job of talking to kids that came by, and they seemed to enjoy telling people their experience with FIRST. As mentors, we also talked to the parents of convention-goers, answered their questions, and gave them advice on how to get their kids involved in FIRST. When we were not at the booth, we were still telling people about what both the kids and our robotics team do. During our travels through the Science Center, people at other exhibits would ask the kids about our exhibits. It was a great event for all three levels of FIRST because we all got to connect with our community and have a lot of fun as a team. |
February 24th - Dr. Christina Drake Interview
CEO and Manager at Kismet Technologies LLC She discussed better ways to organize our members and workload, learned about team and project management, and talked about starting a business. |

March 17th - BNY Mellon Presentation
Our team was invited to virtually present to BNY Mellon in front of over 130 employees after our Florida FTC State Competition. We shared our experiences throughout the season and what we hope to achieve before we head to the World Championship. Many of the employees were highly interested in what our team was able to accomplish as well as our individual abilities. Overall, we gained several new connections. |

April 4th - UCF STEM Day
During our time at the UCF STEM Day, we taught kids from ages 6 to 12 about the importance of STEM by showing hands-on examples of innovation through a set of fun crafts. We showed the importance of the design process by allowing kids to experiment with different airplane designs, experimented with force with fun catapults, and taught about taking in the environment with craft helicopters by teaching them about drag and autorotation. We hope these fun crafts inspired the kids to take in many different factors and ideas when looking at design in the future. |

April 9th - 7-Eleven Car Wash
While going to World Championship for the FIRST Tech Challenge competition is an exciting venture for our team, it is also very financially taxing. Lodgings, food, transportation, and pit elements all add up, so to eliminate some of the financial burden, we decided to have a large fundraising campaign in our community. This campaign included reaching out to several local businesses, passing out brochures, and hosting a car wash. We multitasked by providing information about our program as we washed cars, and by the end of the day, we raised a total of $717. It was exciting to reach a new part of our community and inform them of all the wonderful things we are doing as a club! |
April 18th - Forbes Interview
We reached out to Forbes magazine to interview for a report about the up and coming world competition. Ms. Janet Burns, a senior contributor and freelance writer on consumer technology, questioned our team and listened to our world's presentation script. We were able to discuss the multi faceted nature of FIRST and elaborated on the new technology we are using within our robot as well as our outreach program. She was shocked to see how much our team has developed in 5 years and the advancement of the technology we are using. Among other things we focused on the customized parts on the robot as well as our teams collaboration and FIRST's embodiment of Gracious Professionalism. |

May 14th - 7-Eleven Car wash
After coming back from the FIRST Tech Challenge World Competition, our savings have been drained from lodgings, food, transportation, and pit elements. Not to mention, the start of our summer RoboBoat season was about to commence, and team registration fees are no joke! To eliminate some of the financial burden, we continued our fundraising campaign in our community by contacting local businesses, passing out sponsor brochures, and hosting a car wash at the local gas station. We multitasked by providing information about our program as we washed cars. By the end of the day, we raised a total of $537! |
